In the Body

Tom Evert

I have enjoyed a world-class career as a dancer, but my art beginnings were as a visual art student in high school for which I was encouraged through winning a medal from the Graphic Arts Society. I also loved sports as a youth and then through my involvement in art I found that as a dancer I could be both an athlete and an artist. I received Fine Arts degrees in both Painting and Dance from Ohio University. I have enjoyed an award-winning career choreographing dances and teaching. My work ranges from highly produced theatrical works to creating educational programs in schools. My sculptural work is primarily figurative, and celebrates the expression of the human spirit through representational and abstract approaches to the figure.

My primary sculptural medium is wood which is either carved from full sections of tree limbs or is formed from a piece that is found in nature and may already have an expressive gesture from which a piece is further developed. The works are renderings of dancers, abstraction, devotion and nature. Decades of tours and out of town work were always accompanied by my drawing gear capturing responses of the dancing figures in my company.

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller" with The Art Storefronts Organization, which means you can shop with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my products.

Inspiration

The disciplines and training demanded of an athlete and of a professional career as a dancer have groomed a mastery of the  sensual and figurative knowledge to create these three-dimensional sculptures.  I have a life-long  practice as a visual artist offering artistic expression of the human figure in many disciplines that have supported my work as a dancer and choreographer including painting, murals, sculpture, drawing, puppetry, mask making, props, set design and costuming.

Techniques

The works are rendered through  carving methods such as roughing forms into shape with a chain saw and grinder, then articulated with  a mallet striking gouges, smoothed with rasps and sandpaper and finally stained or painted and top coated.

career highlights

As a sculptor and painter,  I have  garnered prizes in many group shows and sculptural exhibitions, and created works for commissions and private collections.
